The new Mk8 VW Golf GTD is excellent and all, but the previous era version ticks the same containers for a fraction of the price
Because we’ve said a few times at this point, the VW Golfing 8 doesn’t move matters on from its predecessor a tremendous amount. In some ways, it’s a little even worse, with a slow, buggy infotainment system, the removal of physical weather controls and some cheap-feeling components among the irksome elements.
With that in mind, as much as we all liked the new Golf GTD CT had set for review recently, we could not help but wonder if the Mk7 version would be a much better buy. You have the choice associated with either getting a great deal on the nearly new one, or even going right back to the first versions to get a car that will does most of the same items for a fraction of the price. Nowadays, we’re doing the latter.
You can get hold of a 2013 Golf GTD for less than £8000 these days. Our 2014 pick is more at £9495 within the interests of getting one using a lower mileage figure with non-Potato-spec images, but it nevertheless works out at way not more than a third of the cost of the brand new GTD.
It is still reasonably well combined with 97, 925 miles for the clock, but that’s k?rester for the course for an useful diesel car of this age group, and in any case, it isn’t really a figure which would frighten us off. It seems to get been well cared for, arriving with a full service background featuring six stamps through the same “renowned garage”.
Furthermore, it has a couple of things you can’t possess on a modern GTD: the three-door body shell, and also a six-speed manual gearbox. Line through those ratios rapidly enough, and the 181bhp, 280lb ft 2 . 0-litre TDI engine will get you to 62mph from rest in a reputable 7. 4 seconds. Address it more gently, and it’ll return 60mpg.
It appears great in Tornado Crimson, and although it’s difficult to tell in these images, this doesn’t look like the 18″ wheels have had any substantial arguments with kerbs. Within there’s some lovely-looking chequered fabric which will wear extra miles much better than leather, together with option climate control plus cruise control. Oh, plus physical dials, instead of a foolish screen.
