2020 was your year of cancelled events. Absolutely nothing was what it was supposed to be using the ‘Rona running rampant everywhere. Pull races cancelled. Sled pulls nationwide cancelled. Even the Ultimate Callout Problem, the biggest diesel gathering of the season had to be postponed and later terminated. Social gatherings of any kind had been being limited all spring plus summer long but come drop, some areas were starting to relax the reins a bit and a few factors could start happening. Luckily, among those things was Weekend on the Advantage, hosted by Edge Products with their Ogden, UT facility
For 15+ years Advantage has been hosting this annual drop event and had just about come to terms with the thought of not being able to continue the tradition meant for 2020, but luckily county rules let up and the team could put together a scaled back edition of the event. In year’s previous, Edge hosted quarter mile pull races on a Friday night, then a Saturday dyno competition plus sled pull. Unfortunately, with the shutting of their local track in Sodium Lake City a couple years back again, they’ve tried to continue with their large sled pull and dyno competitors every year since. Due to some unmanageable circumstances with this massive health outbreak around the world, it was decided to hold off for the sled pull event for 2020 and just host a quaint consumer appreciation event at their service with the Northwest Dyno Circuit transportable chassis dyno to run some vehicles. With next to no marketing and advertising marketing campaign, and mainly word of mouth just several weeks before the event, there were still nearly 100 trucks registered to contend.
Like previous years, Advantage Products hosted a small vendor street where event sponsors like OptiLube , BD Diesel , Randy’s Tranny , Everyday Driven Performance , and Industrial Injection were set up displaying several product and selling swag. Some other sponsors for the event included Alligator Performance , Thoroughbred Diesel powered , Leading Performance , ATS Diesel , Dynomite Diesel , Nitro Gear plus Axle , and SureCan . Edge also brought in a few food trucks to put together during the lunch time hours to offer free of charge plates to the competitors, employees plus public attending the event. Light rainfall showers through the morning limited a few of the crowd in the early hours, yet by lunch the sun was glowing, and the horsepower numbers were moving strong.
Big talk of the particular show came from the Ultimate Callout Problem competitor, Shawn Baca, and his Learn Shredder truck. As the lead motor builder at Industrial Injection, this particular truck has proven itself provides one of the top diesel trucks in the nation when it comes to horsepower. Baca has been pressing the limits for years and with a small number of 2400-2700 hp pulls consistently during the last year there was talk he’d end up being shooting for that unattainable 3000-horspeower amount on a chassis dyno. It’s never ever been done, but with near ideal conditions, and the excitement in the air through everyone in attendance, the whole Commercial team on site knew it had been time to push the limits plus break some records. Over the first pull, the truck was up hard on the rollers, the particular triple turbos were squealing difficult and when the smoke had resolved Baca broke his previous greatest and a new dyno record from 2920hp. With the engine still purring like a kitten, they opted in order to let it cool down a bit and use a couple larger nitrous jets plus go for broke and break that will 3000-hp mark. Today was the time.
Unfortunately, on his second draw, the RPM’s climbed to rapidly and missed the dyno’s working window and didn’t record their run so a third pull needed to be made.
At this point, the particular engine was extremely hot plus struggled to get up on boost using that fuel as he started the particular dyno pull, and the nitrous began to come on hard, the engine block allow loose near the camshaft journals and another of the largest, most terrifying, plus loudest engine explosions we’ve actually witnessed sent the crowd operating. The massive fireball and encircled the cab where Baca plus dyno operator, Kody Pulliam, could exit quickly with only minimum burns to their arms and neck of the guitar. The force of the explosion had been enough to send the entire engine block regarding 8-ft straight up into the air exactly where it later settled back involving the frame rails with pieces, components, and fluids scattering everywhere. Sadly, from what we can tell, the entire vehicle, chassis, engine, and transmission had been a total loss, and this will most likely become the last time we see Learn Shredder. But knowing Shawn, he is already gone to the drawing table and started devising a new arrange for a replacement to continue pushing the limitations. Maybe that 3000hp mark simply isn’t possible on a chassis dynamometer? If 2020 has taught all of us anything, it’s to always be prepared for that unexpected. With his $100k+ truck moving away, Baca breaking that report is the unexpected at this specific moment in time. But we know Shawn well plus honestly, we can’t wait to find out him break that 3KHP indicate.
Weekend break on the Edge 2020 was certainly a scaled back version associated with what we’re used to seeing with this event year after year. But with everything we have seen happen this past year, we were therefore thankful Edge Products was prepared to put in the time and the effort to generate this happen and give diesel fanatics something to look forward to and also a place they could get together to share their particular love for the sport.
