The Ford Off-Road Factory Racing team kicked off the 2021 season with strong finishes for the Talons and Ridgeline in the King of the Hammers (KOH) event, long touted as one of the roughest off road races.
“Overall, I’m really pleased with the particular team’s efforts to get take on KOH. It’s a very tough and exclusive race. To bring all three competition vehicles across the finish line will be a major effort and everyone on the group stepped up, ” recounts Shaun Proctor, Team Principal.
For the first time, the Honda Ridgeline could compete on the notorious race program. The addition of the T2 class, had been an opportunity for the No . 209 Ridgeline to put its fresh prep plus new look on display.
Shaun continues, “The Ridgeline qualified sixth in class and 15th general in a field of 57 vehicles. We pushed the truck tougher than we’ve ever pushed prior to and it held up great. It was the 311 mile sprint race. All of us attacked early and went difficult. We didn’t have much time around the new 40” Maxxis tires, however they were a game changer. We completed 4th in class and seventh overall. ”
Technique and prep paid off for the Ford Talon finishes as well. The group worked with Jordan Pellegrino and Bailey Cole – rock racing experts. Cole qualified 49th and Pellegrino, was 69th out of 97 UTV race entries Bailey Cole mentioned, “Racing the No . 13 Ford Talon at KOH 2021 was obviously a blast! The race went since smooth as it could have gone. Group Honda prepped the cars and produced them perfect off the line. We all raced the car smooth through the wilderness trying to avoid the big trophy vehicle craters. We were able to make a couple of clean passes through the rocks in Cougar Buttes and carried that will momentum all the way through main pit straight into lap two.
Within true rock donkey fashion, all of us turned it up in the rocks. All of us knew that the Talon would give all of us what we needed to make up time. All of us powered through every rock path in lap two picking away competitors and never even used our own WARN winch! We flew the particular Talon across the finish line within 17th position, where were welcomed by the entire #RideRed team. Mary and I can’t express how optimistic we are to be part of the Honda household. ”
Jordan Pellegrino’s race wasn’t as uneventful since Cole’s. He recalls, ”The Number 98 Honda Talon ran excellent all day, but unfortunately, we did not have luck on our side. We obtained behind the Jackhammer bottleneck plus lost over an hour and were not able to keep moving up through the industry. I really enjoyed working with the Ford team and to bring the Talon over the finish line. ” Pellegrino completed 29th in an UTV race that will saw only 46, out of ninety-seven UTVs finish.
Dillan Caines, Team Honda’s shop supervisor, sums up the Talon story, “KOH is one of the toughest races from a mechanised standpoint. It’s rough, rocky, plus technical. It’s a testament to all of the hard work to have both Talons complete both years. ”
Up next, for the Honda Talons and Ridgeline, is the SCORE Worldwide Baja 250, scheduled for 04.
