We all know the current brand new car dealers are nothing like the Car Dealers from the days gone by. Obviously everything changes and you would anticipate that, but you know what stuck away in this picture for me? The little gadget DeSoto car. My goodness thoughtful Mom used to say. That small car would be worth lots of moola today.
I am not clear if the service is any better or even worse today versus back then, yet everything else has. It was forbidden previously for one owner to have more than one brand name under the roof. Now, it’ h the only way. Mega dealers that market Ford, Chevrolet, Kia, Honda and much more are the norm. They advertise continuously and the automotive business still has got the corniest commercials on TV. I don’ t understand how a dealer using a multi million dollar chain would want to embark on TV and make an butt out of himself.
Obviously the old dealerships that are long gone are also still money makers. People wish to find and buy old signs plus anything related to a long ago company. I recall going to my only Ford dealer while in my teenagers. Everyone knew the parts plus service manager because they were lifers. Now, if one stays 6 months he ought to get a gold watch.
Now, they have service groups that are color coded in many stores. It’ s hard to figure out which to talk to. Last night I met a brand new friend at the car show. He or she told me the following story. He got his Ford Escape into the seller for a very hard shifting issue. Following the vehicle was there for a 7 days HE called THEM and has been told a transmission was upon order. Once the trans came in they will have it done in a day or so. Several days later they called him plus said the trans was in however the shifting problem did not go away. These were stumped. He said he recommended they reach out to a tech range or something as the vehicle continues to be gone two weeks now.
Well, a few days later they known as again and said the great Escape was completed. What was the matter? A solenoid. A cheap and easy component to find and replace. My brand new found friend had a $900 car rental tab and was told in the future and pick up your Escape plus thank you. Is that the state of the Marriage in our shops today? I am scared so in most cases. The cars are so complex and the technicians are so hard to find. Most feel you can plug to the dash, get a code and change the item. Not true and not true in any way. I am not sure where all this goes but it makes me appreciate our old classics.
The issue on that side of the aged business is we lack more youthful folks that understand points, condensers, carbohydrates, timing marks, and so on. So , we have been in a pickle on both sides. The is most of us that own the classics usually can do some work ourself. The newer cars seem kilometers above our mentality and that is scary. I dread not knowing what’ t going on and the trust factor for me personally is nearly zero regarding today’ s i9000 dealerships. The fact is it appears like no one stays put anymore. It’ ersus hard enough to recruit the right individuals but retaining them is also harder. Stay tuned and share your tales if you wish and let’ s wish for better days for the automotive dealers.
