Skyler Howes: An American Underdog

The Dakar Move is synonymous with being the particular longest and most grueling off-road competition in the world. The 43rd Dakar move will be held in Saudi Persia, taking place over 14 days, starting from The month of january 3rd to 15th, 2021. All through those two weeks, racers from around the world will be covering  4751 kilometers ( 7646 km). Away from 108 bikes entered in the move, a surprising underdog has sacrificed every thing for the opportunity to go back and start ninth to try his hand at getting the second American to win Dakar: Skyler Howes.

This race any of few in the world Americans haven’t dominated – that was until 2020 when Ricky Brabec became the very first American to claim victory with regard to Honda HRC. All three People in america that entered that rally put into the top 10, including  Andrew Short  and Skyler Howes, who would take those world by storm and place ninth. But this isn’t about how insane the particular rally is or how excellent we Americans are; it is in regards to the privateer Skyler Howes who’s sacrificed everything to get where he is these days.

At the age of 3 years old, his dad put him on a Honda XR75, but from the moment he raced away from into the desert, dirt bikes had been in his blood from then on. He would embark on to race throughout the years off and on but mostly ride for fun till Fasst Company convinced him in order to race a National Hare plus Hound series, one of the western Usa States’ premier desert racing activities. Where he nearly won the tournament. By 2012 he would return using a few sponsors and win the particular 250 Championship earning him an expert number.

Over the next year, he guaranteed a spot on a team racing the 2-stroke 250 and would carry on and race and would find themselves racing alongside Kurt Caselli, the particular late desert racing star. He’d become the reason for piquing his desire for going to Dakar in the first place. Skyler appeared up to Kurt as a mentor plus taught him his fundamental concepts of racing on a bike, even today – applying it to each and every competition. That same 2013 season, Skyler would break his back throughout a race and only leave him using a 3rd place finish.

Throughout the years, this individual laid low only racing every now and then; he would go on to finish on the podium of the Baja 500 and a thousand multiple times. Then would be parting methods with a team to venture by himself. Though it was a tough decision, this left him with nothing, not really a bike to go race upon at this point. He couldn’t afford a whole bike, so he dragged a well used Honda 450x from behind the barn and prepped it sufficient to go race the longest rough-road race in America, Vegas to Sparks. This would be the longest race he’d ever solo. Just 15 kilometers shy from the finish, he had the mechanical issue. Only one person would certainly stop to help him fix their bike and get him back in the competition to finish. Little did he understand, that stranger who helped your pet is why he would go to Dakar.

That will stranger was Garrett Poucher, who seem to messaged him on Facebook plus asked if he was thinking about racing rally for him. Garrett gave him one roadbook and place him up with the proper equipment plus knowledge necessary to race rally. The initial stage rally race he actually entered was the Yokohama Sonora Move in 2018, which he earned, granting him an entry to the 2019 Dakar Rally taking place within Peru.

Skyler was now racing along with minimal experience at the most prestigious contests in the world as a privateer with no stock team behind him. He dislocated his shoulder on the third day time of the 10-day rally and had a couple of good days, which ended up putting him in the top 20 general. Unfortunately, he had to retire upon day six due to another dislocated shoulder that he could not pop in. Later on that year went on in order to win the Morocco Desert Problem and the Best in the Desert Open up Pro Championship, being one of the just riders in history to solo each and every event, win them, and earn the championship.

At this point, Skyler’s life has totally changed as he has proven to discover great success in the rally plus desert racing, proving he has what must be done to compete with the top athletes which it wasn’t just luck that will landed him these opportunities.

The particular racing didn’t stop; he just wanted to push harder and further plus took the opportunity to race the Serres Rally: a race that contained difficult terrain and navigation. Upon day four of the rally, this individual crashed and broke his throat, breaking his C6 vertebrae. It was just four months before he or she was heading to Dakar 2020.

Recuperation was the only option at this point – no riding, no serious physical exercise, or anything. He only experienced three weeks until Dakar in support of one week to fully train for it. Chances were against him, despite getting off a bike for nearly 4 months, he made it happen; there was most option.

Skyler became a part of history and positioned ninth overall as a privateer within the world’s toughest race on a share replica rally bike with very little testing on it. He had no manufacturer backing; he went there by himself determination and did it.

This year Skyler is heading back in order to Dakar this year again as a privateer with a mission: to win. Increasing funds to go was no simple task; racing is not his full-time job, and many sponsors weren’t capable to help this year. Skyler had to market the rest of his race bikes to be able to happen, and at the moment, he does not need a bike to ride whenever he gets back home. He could link up with the reputable BAS Dakar KTM, where he will lastly have access to the resources and equipment necessary to be even more successful with Dakar.

Skyler has gone through a great deal to get to this point in his career, compromising everything to ensure he follows their dreams. 2021 Dakar is just around the corner, and he has proven to the world which he has what it takes to be a serious challenger this year. He is the American Underdog.
