Expanding its model range Alfa Romeo fulfils the promises, made after the 159 had been stopped, to introduce a new four-door mid-size sedan. Among the announced new models there is such a sporty sedan which will supposedly be named Giulia, and it will be a full-fledged successor of the 159. The car was planned to come several years ago, but its release was postponed because the developers offered for it a new RWD platform instead of the CUSW platform with front-wheel-drive. This platform was used for several Fiat cars co-produced with Chrysler.
Judging by the first photos of the sedan, it is possible to say that the Alfa Romeo Giulia 2016 in the lines of the bodywork will somewhat resemble the Maserati Ghibli. However, differing from the Ghibli, it will have smaller dimensions. Creating the car shorter and narrower, the Alfa Romeo designers aimed to make it a good competitor in the sport sedan class where the top positions belong to such recognized models as the Jaguar XE and the BMW 3-Series.
Reportedly, another adoption from the Maserati Ghibli for the Giulia will be a rear-wheel-drive platform. Slightly remade to decrease the cost and code-named Giorgio, it will provide all-wheel-drive as an option. The platform is also planned to be used for some other Alfa Romeo’s vehicles as well as several future Chrysler’s models like the Dodge 300, the Dodge Charger and the Dodge Challenger.
In the exterior the Alfa Romeo Giulia 2016 will have a quite aggressive design thanks to the long hood, stylish LED headlights and big air intakes. The sporty look will be supplemented by 17-inch alloy wheels. The rear end will feature a short tailgate with integrated LED taillights and a diffuser with a dual-pipe exhaust system. Overall, the new sedan will look very elegant and sleek.
As far as the powertrain of the Alfa Romeo Giulia 2016, it is expected to be equipped with inline-four engines. It is going to be a 1.75-liter turbocharged unit producing 240 hp or a more powerful 1.8-liter engine with 300 hp. For the export versions it will be provided with diesel power units. At the moment there is no precise information about the upcoming sedan’s transmission. One of the most possible variants is a dual-clutch automatic which is installed in the sport car 4C.
Release data and price
The new Giulia’s debut should take place in late of 2015, though there are no official details of its release. Based on some predictions its price could reach $45,000.
