2016 Honda CR-Z

The first CR-Z concept was presented in 2010 at the Detroit Auto Show. Then the car was labeled as an efficient and inexpensive vehicle. This sport car is considered to be a successor of the CR-X in some aspects. The last refreshment of the model was four years ago. So, naturally, now the Japanese automaker is ready to introduce a new version which will obviously represent the next generation of the car. According some rumors, it may have a quite different design reminding the Civic Type R. Getting a new platform the coupe will be powered by a new engine as well. The car’s dimensions will be somewhat enlarged giving more space and convenience for the passengers. It’s not ruled out that besides hatch-back the 2016 Honda CR-Z will have one more body style.

Built on the same platform as the latest Civic model the new CR-Z will be, however, shorter. It will come with noticeably changed exterior design which also resembles the Civic. Such a design solution is expected to make it more popular, considering the success of the latter. Thus, receiving a sportier look with curved outlines the coupe will easily compete with such first-range sport cars as the Subaru BRZ, Volkswagen GTI and Toyota GT 86.

A new look will be distinguished by more aggressive headlights and stylish chrome grill. The rear end will get a simple design fitting the overall appearance.

Performance

In the specification aspect the upcoming CR-Z is a really great step forward, compared to the current version. It is the answer to the requests of Honda American Executives to develop a reasonably priced high-performance sport car which would increase popularity of the brand.

At the moment there are some talks about the new coupe’s powertrain. It is said to be a changed variant of the turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four V-TEC engine which is another borrowing from the Civic Type R. In this CR-Z’s sibling the motor shows the output of 306 hp and 400 N-m of torque.

However, unlike the American version, the Japanese modification of the 2016 Honda CR-Z will keep the hybrid engine. It is going to be a 1.5-liter V4 direct-injected turbocharged engine matched with an electric motor. This power unit has some advancement as well, and is more powerful than the current engine. It is able to generate up to 220 hp and 320 N-m of torque. The powertrain will be supplemented with a 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox instead of the old 6-speed manual.
